Statement

Wrekin View is proud to be an independent practice, one of a very few remaining in Telford, and has operated as such for over 100 years. We have full control over the prices we charge for consultations, surgery and drugs and all of our vets are free to decide what they think is the best treatment for your pets; there are no targets or incentives for any staff members.

The veterinary profession is under huge strain in the UK, it is currently extremely difficult to recruit vets leading to our existing vets working longer hours than is ideal. This puts additional pressure on them when they are already undertaking stressful work. Vets will go home worrying about your pet, the decisions they've made and what the next steps might be. Whilst we would love to go back to the days of running our own on-call service it's simply not realistic to ask a vet, who has already worked a 10-hour day, to be on call overnight and then come in and work another 10 hours.

It would be wonderful if there was an NHS for pets and commercial decisions didn't need to influence clinical ones but as we're discovering the NHS model doesn't work reliably either. Your pet can be seen more quickly than you will be, if they need an x-ray or an operation this can most likely be carried out on the same day or within a few days and you will often be talking directly to the vet who will complete the procedure. You will get an itemised estimate for all treatment and we are happy to provide prescriptions for drugs.

We welcome the investigation into the profession by the CMA and hope it will shed some light on some of the pressures and inconsistencies within the profession and lead to improved treatment and outcomes for pets and their owners.
