Repeat Prescriptions
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) guidelines state that a veterinary surgeon may only prescribe a medicine of the category "Prescription Only Medicine, Veterinarian, [POM-V]" after a clinical assessment of the animal. This means that, by regulation, if your pet has an on-going condition that requires a repeat prescription, then your pet must be checked periodically by a veterinary surgeon. This is a legal requirement; when prescribing prescription-only medicines, the veterinary surgeon is taking responsibility for that treatment. Regular check ups ensure that your pet receives appropriate and correct treatments.
At Wrekin View Veterinary Practice, we will need to re-assess pets requiring repeat prescriptions every three to six months, depending on the condition being treated; this period may vary with individual circumstances at the discretion of the vet. Some animals will only require annual check ups, for exampl;e, stable ongoing conditions such as hypothyroidism, or fot prescription-only flea medications. There is normally a charge for this check up, but we offer a lower consultation fee if the check up is routine and straightforward. If an annual check is all that's required this is usually incorporated with your pet's annual booster vaccination.
Please make requests for repeat prescriptions at least one working day before collection, as some items may have to be ordered from our suppliers.
A written prescription for the dispensing of medicines elsewhere can be provided on request; a charge will be made for this service (see below).
A written prescription will be for an appropriate supply of medication; this prescription can then be repeated at the discretion of the veterinary surgeon until your pet is due for a check up.
The present charge for a Private Written Prescription is £ 14.25 including VAT.
